Well, it's been some time since my last post, so I'm beginning to feel guilty about not having written. I don't know why, though, as I'm pretty much the only person reading this thing.
In all honesty, nothing's really changed. I'm reaching the point where I can start writing my grant proposals, background research being mostly completed, but I'm finding myself less than inspired when it comes to the actual writing. I think today is the day to just suck it up and get started.
Lab has been going well, I think for the most part I have the students respect, but at the same time, they seem comfortable enough to ask me questions where they have them. That's sort of the ideal situation in lab as far as I'm concerned.
Of course there are exceptions. I had to lay down the law this week when I had a student show up late and then get caught fiddling with her cell phone later on in lab. The massive points loss for lateness is a course-wide policy that I have no control over, and I of course had to make good on my first-day threat to dock points in a major way for in-class electronics use. I find it incredibly disrespectful, and said as much on day one. So I sent her an email telling her she'd have to clean up her act if she expects to pass. Hopefully the abysmal grade she'll be receiving for this week's lab will help illustrate the point. I'm hoping it's just a freshman-not-realizing-this-is-no-longer-high-school issue, and that she can indeed turn it around and succeed.
I'll try to end on a positive note. Ummm... it's warm and sunny today! The bike ride in to the office was awesome this morning! I wore short sleeves for the first time in like two weeks! Exclamation points make all notes more positive. Okay, maybe only in this case.
